French term or phrase: carton bouilli
I know this is not papier mache, but I do have not found any references to it in English apart from one text which is about Marie-Antoinette., which makes me think it is a translation ( I am talking when you google it) Is there a more technical term for this substance. Any artists out there?

Here is the description:

les fauteuils en carton bouilli de sa salle à manger sont une torture pour le dos.

Explanation:
I used to have a suitcase made of what the French call "carton bouilli". As far as I know this is usually called "pressed cardboard" in English.

papier maché

Explanation:
Are you SURE it's not papier maché ?

this bilingual reference thinks it is : http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/lot_details.aspx?pos=8&in...

and "papier maché chairs" gets 19000 internet references, both antique and contemporary

"A pair of early Victorian papier mâché chairs, with Chinoiserie decoration on a black and gilt ground, each with lobed and waisted pierced back, cane seat and cabriole front legs joined by turned stretchers."

pasteboard

Explanation:
The 'Mediadico' translator gives "pasteboard" as the translation of "carton bouilli"

I have found the following site that may help solve the problem:

http://www.economypoint.org/pasteboard/index.html .

This quote is taken from the given URL: "Pasteboard is from cellulose or waste paper by sticking and/or - manufactured material for the packaging industry or arts and crafts presses. The production-determined originally usually grey pasteboard experienced a undreamt-of upswing by the Swedish invention of the Tetrapaks in the late 50's and the various printing on and serviceability. Even furniture and emergency money were already made of pasteboard."

neutral  Catharine Cellier-Smart: probably right in other contexts but your quote talks about the packaging industry or arts and crafts. An internet search for "pasteboard furniture" only gets 600 results, and "pasteboard chairs" only 90 results, most of which have the same origin.
