Yes, kashew, I think that's nearer the mark. I found a Canadian trade mark journal with "maillet" translated as "maul"... the actual item that cuts the rubber seems, as it were, to be taken as read. As Bourth says, you need something along the lines of a "punch" as well.

La seule chose que j'ai vue découper au maillet c'est des joints sur un plan de joint à arêtes vives, le joint papier ou liège se découpe sur les bords vifs et pour les trous on découpe avec une bille d'acier au-dessous de l'alésage dans le plan de joint. Je doute que ça fonctionne avec du caoutchouc

If it’s literal, how you square the notion of “cutting” rubber with a traditionally non-bladed instrument?
I did find one mediaeval-looking dictionary in which “maillet” was translated as “Butcher’s Ax” [sic]
