In case it's not clear, scalarization (scalarisation in British English) is the replacement of a non-scalar problem by a scalar one. The non-scalar problem has data in an array (of one or more dimensions: a one-dimensional array is a vector). Scalarising an operation on an array means operating on each element of the array, since by definition an element of an array is a scalar (i.e. usually a single number).
