Mathematics & Statistics
French term or phrase: amplitude
From a translation about modelling data gathered during a survey: "Le réseau ainsi mis en évidence présentait une amplitude totale de 306 nœuds." I'm unsure if range or amplitude should be used in this context.

English translation:Range
Explanation:
This is a tricky one:

The mathematical/statistical definition of amplitude in French is "Range" I believe, or the difference between the highest value and the lowest value.

The physics definition of the word amplitude, both in english and in french, like for example the amplitude of a sine wave, refers to the maximum amount of displacement experienced from its undisturbed state (usually zero).

So for example a sine wave with goes from -3 to 3 would have une amplitude de 3... but again, this is not the right usage of amplitude if you are talking about modelling statistical data with a Frenchman/woman.

I guess you need to examine whether the text you are translating is in a math or physics context.

all the best!

amplitude

Explanation:
maximum value reached of a signal. any signal is defined by 2 things amplitude and frequency. For instance a signal of 5sin(50t) has an amplitude of 5 and a frequency of 50/2Pi
