From a detailed description of the Montessori teaching method for maths. (I doubt these are 'gems' ! - maybe counting beads?)

The section on "Multiplication" reads like this:

• Statique (simple), dynamique (avec piège), avec des zéros

Montessori's a LONG way back for me... but from those dim recollections, I think it is indeed referring to beads — as commonly used with children on abacuses too, of course.

Explanation:
Montessori's a LONG way back for me... but from those dim recollections, I think it is indeed referring to beads — as commonly used with children on abacuses too, of course.

agree  Wordeffect: I still don't know how to multiply using beads - perhaps I should go back to nursery school! / Ah yes, of course, that I can manage, but I'd love to know how the Chinese do it! =)

  -> Thanks, W/E! Set out 3 piles of 4 beads each (= 3 × 4), then add up how many beads you have; it's the addition method of teaching multiplication, less abstract to a child's mind, I think?
