French to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Mechanics / Mech Engineering / Job description relating to bridge crane operation
French term or phrase: chef de manœuvre
In an industrial plant context (power station).

This is not the crane driver, but the person in charge of lifting operations, who has to be suitably authorized and qualified, and is likely to be the one giving hand signals / instructions to the crane driver.

I have found "dogman" in the archives, which exactly describes the right job, but sadly seems to be restricted quite narrowly to AU / NZ usage.

GDT suggests "dispatcher", but that is in an aeronautical context, and I am far from happy that it would apply in the case of general industrial handling operations.

Thanks a lot, Terry! Obscure, as you say — but certainly seems to fit the bill.

Asker: Merci, Mary-Ann ! I think your suggestion is probably literally right, but decided to avoid being too specific, just to be on the safe side.

def.

Explanation:
From my notes:
Contrôleur (guiding crane operator, etc.) Banksman, signaller, dogman (For some, a dogman attaches loads to a crane hook = slinger).

<<banksman (signalman, spotter USA) A crane-driver's helper. He or she signals to the driver when to raise, lower, swing the jib, etc. and the crane driver obeys no one else [except his wife] >>

Asker: Thanks a lot for your suggestion, Philippe! In the end, I decided to steer clear of the use of "signalling", as I think the rôle of this person is a lot wider than that, and signalling is just one of their responsibilities

Asker: Thanks, Gabuss! Although your suggestion was certainly a perfectly viable option, I felt it was rather too general to fit in to the wider context, where I might have ended up with a whole string of posts who could all equally well have been referred to as "O.M.s"
