Explanation:
Hydraulic breaker, pecker ... (there are other terms, but my mind is already turning to sex, so I'll stop).

A big pointy thing (steel - not what you're thinking) on the end of a digger arm, used for breaking possibly not so much rock as concrete, during demolition work.

No, the carriage has its engine to make it move, slew the rig, etc. and also to run a hydraulic pump that operates the ..... all right, I've had a cold shower ... the other word I was thinking of is ... "nibbler" ... oh my God, that's just as bad. Back to the shower.

hydraulic hammer, impact hammer, rock breaker, hydraulic breaker - A hydraulically operated tool mounted on the jib or bucket of an excavator or loader. Though in principle it resembles the hand-held, compressed-air-driven concrete breaker or penumatic pick, it is many times more powerful, and with an 80mm thick point is far too heacy for one person to handle. In 1988 the largest hydraulic hammer weighed 3.5 tons. It is used ifor tunnel driving (even in granite) instead of blasting, or for scaling rock after blasting while the operator shelters in the cabin ...

agree  jacqueb: Right, and excuse me for sounding like Henry James, but wouldn't the "pecker" be the "bite" at the end of the hydraulic jack-hammer?
