French to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Mechanics / Mech Engineering / Weld joints
French term or phrase: arrachement
I know this term came up in September, but I'm not at all convinced that "tearing" will do here.

In my case, this is talking about weld (or other) joints in heat exchangers and ensuring that they are sufficiently strong.

By assemblages, I assume they're taking about the joins themselves.

It sounds as though it's a kind of test they perform on the joints to make sure that they don't come apart - if I've understood it correctly.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Claire Cox

Many thanks to you all; this is a weld joint although the text did say that the conditions applied to other types of joints as well.

agree  mchd: or even just tear// score is not my concern. Your answer is correct, though "tear" is also used to mean "arrachement, déchirure" in tube manufaturer's glossaries.

-> I don't agree that 'tear' by itself is correct or even adequate in this context. If you don't agree with my answer 'as is', please post your own answer, with suitable refs.

agree  chris collister: out or off, as in "I'll tear your limbs off"... "Ripping out" gets the idea, but perhaps not quite the right register

pull-out test

Explanation:
Whatever you call it, I think you need to specify "test", which goes unsaid in French.

You refer to "weld (or other) joints". Heat exchanger tubes are often roller expanded into the holes in the plate, i.e. they are swaged or wedged into place, not welded. In this case, "pull-out" would be said.

The most commonly use method of making TUBE/TUBE SHEET JOINTS is ROLLER EXPANSION.

Roller expansion procedures for titanium tubes into tube sheets are similar to those used for other materials. For best results, the tube sheet holes should be within the limits specified by TEMA (Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association) for shell and tube heat exchangers (Table 21) or within the limits specified by HEI (Heat Exchange Institute) Standards for steam surface condensers.

There are three commonly used methods of determining the correct amount of expansion:
1. Measuring wall reduction
2. Simulating wall reduction by interference
3. Pull-out strength versus torque curve
The above PULL-OUT TEST is preferable.

Must admit I'm mystified by the "n+1" and "n" business. If a heat exchangers has 33 tubes in it (n=32), why on earth can't they perform the test on the last tube????

agree  xxxmediamatrix: They can't test the last tube because the test is done by pulling on 2 tubes, not by pulling 1 tube wrt the plate. So when you test the last 2 tubes, 1 against the other, you cannot know whether the tube that doesn't yield would pass the test or not.
