Since agar (as opposed to agar agar, which seems very popular with vegetarians) is used as a microbiological culture medium in Petri dishes, this would seem to fit with the metrological (presumably not a typo for météorologique) flavour.
Although context is lacking, I guess the text is related to air sampling and quality?
If "Petri swab" sounds a little too free, you could try the more prosaic "culture dish applicator"
