French term or phrase: axialement
"L'arbre principal doit plaquer axialement sur la bague intérieure du roulement à billes".
From a procedure for rebuilding a gearbox.

Does this mean the main shaft must be pressed onto the inner roller bearing bush "end-on"? Can someone come up with a good turn of phrase for this sentence? Thanks,
James.

impinges axially
Explanation:
James, I think the word you're having trouble with is "plaquer", not "axialement" which is just axially. I agree with "axially loaded" according to my esteemed colleague, but in engineering we often use the word "impinge."

e.g. The main shaft impinges axially on the inner roller bearing..."

neutral Richard Benham: I'm suspicious of this "loaded". Doesn't seem to make sense or correspond to "plaquer". Certainly "axially" is a perfectly good English word which generally corresponds to "axialement".
