Describing a new technique for treating gum disease.

Cette discipline vise à supprimer les poches parodontales et à ****stopper la fonte osseuse**** afin d’éviter la chute des dents tout en facilitant l’hygiène dentaire.

What I've got so far is 'stopping the wasting away of the bone' - but it definitely doesn't sound right, and is it bone or tooth?

Any help this weekend would be much appreciated.
