muscle excursions: full, intermediate, initial
Explanation:
see term "muscle excursion"in reference.
concept is dividing the contraction into initial, intermediate and full excursion of the muscles possible contraction. degree of contraction from relaxed to fully contracted.
newer weight training and rehabilitatin machines make specific use of this in their design. (I use a set of 10 of them at the health /fitness center.) Each phase gets worked separately by a cam changing the resistance.

Thanks, "excursion" makes sense. Apparently "range of motion of the muscle" also applies.

muscle system(s)

Explanation:
I would call them the complete, external, internal and medial muscle systems.

I would not use "muscular system(s)", because that usually refers to the system of all muscles throughout the body.

See what others think...

Thanks for the response and additional info. I thought of "plane", but that doesn't quite seem to fit either, because it's not a surface. Or "aspect", that's probably a stretch, too (ha ha). For as much physical therapy, massage therapy, body work, etc. as I've had (as a patient - I had major traumatic injuries four years ago, and have been impaired ever since), I feel like I should know this! But I'm afraid I've fizzled. Someone will come up with it for you. Interesting work - good luck!

Asker: Thanks. However I don't think "muscle system" is right. The context is muscle movement and muscle work. For more context: "Dans la course externe, le travail du muscle se situe entre une position d’allongement complet du corps musculaire et une position d’allongement incomplet du corps musculaire." Any more hints?

Asker: Thanks. It seems you're thinking in terms of anatomy though. This refers to movement - which is why I'm stuck! "Course" refers to the work of the muscle, or muscle position, according to the movement performed. ex: "La course interne: Le travail du muscle se situe entre une position de raccourcissement incomplet du corps musculaire et une position de raccourcissement complet du corps musculaire."

-> Good point. I think the adjectives you proposed are more commonly used in muscle work (which the asker has now specified), wherease the internal/external/superior/anterior, etc. are more common in PT, surgery, physical exam, etc.

muscle layer

Explanation:
In anatomy one speaks of muscle layers. As Felicien has pointed out, they are often called superficial, intermediate and deep.

In English, at least, the term "system" is usually used in the functional sense to distinguish physiological components - the muscle system, the digestive system, the nuerological system, etc.

Asker: Thanks Michael. Again, I think this refers to movement rather than anatomy. I wonder if "work of the muscle" might do the trick...?
