Extract from a novel : an old lady in hospital (possibly nursing home), mind wandering, thinks the 'infirmière en chef' is spying on her. Have found 'matron', have envisaged '(ward) sister' and/or 'staff nurse'. Would like opinions on that. Would like to know more about US English possibilities - have found 'senior nurse' and don't know what that corresponds to, and then have got completely confused by my searches for US usage. I'm not looking for THE answer, but any different possibilities that could be acceptable, especially as it's a novel, not a job description. Many, many thanks in advance!

By the way, "matron" is definitely not US usage, no matter where you are, at least not nowadays!

See additional comments below in answers. Also, the nursing supervisor is on top of the whole pyramid and manages all nurses, not just a unit.

Drmanu49 - I've got so much reading to do now! All this is much clearer in my head. I was particularly concerned about American usage, and my feelings about the British terms are now professionally confirmed.

You are right about the State Janet, but even there the term can be used. See my last ref. I wonder whether a nurse manager is not more like a nurse supervisor who is not necessarily in charge of a unit?

Hi DrManu. I'm sure that you're right for a large chunk of the US, but I just wanted to point out that there are regional/geographical differences. California is of course known to be very progressive!

Here's an interesting Wiki article expaining differences in UK and elsewhere. Not much about US titles though. Nurse manager is what was used in my experience. Charge nurse and then staff nurse would be below in the hierarchical order. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nurse

I don't think so (check my ref) for me a senior nurse is one who helps to train junior nurses.

I don't really see staff nurse or sister as equivalent to "infirmière en chef".

Gosh, you are all so wonderful! Looks like we've got matron/head nurse sorted. But of course I'll wait. To repeat, if anyone has any comments on sister/staff nurse or US equivalents, I'd be really grateful!
