I can't say I see where the problem lies when it comes to "phrasing it", but for those who appear to have difficulty, how about:
The people concerned have a type of diagnosed condition bordering on clinical syndromes (i.e. [or should that really be "e.g."?] psychosis, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, etc.).
