mean vs average 15:57 Nov 4
I haven't done specific in-depth research, but as a general principle, I would favour 'mean' in formal technical / scientific registers. Although in everyday language we do use 'average' for 'mean' (in the mathematical sense), I think it is to be deprecated in formal contexts, not least because of the potential ambiguity with 'average' meaning moderate, mediocre, etc.
Although I do not have any medical training and am certainly not a specialist medical translator, I do happen to have a small amount of specialist knowledge in acoustics and audiometry.
FWIW, a quick Google search returns significantly more results for 'mean hearing loss' than for 'average hearing loss' — and we must not forget that the results for the latter expression include quite a number of red herrings relating to the alternative meaning of 'average'. |
