I wondered if the 'K' part of 'IK' might be something to do with the fact that some medical acts are coded with a K# number; there are so few words that start with 'K' in French, it's hard to see (except 'kiné'!)
If it's any help, everyone and everything in FR seems to have a number: my GP, for example, has a unique, national ID number (which is quite handy, since you certainly can't read it when he writes his name!)
So every establishment, and possibly every service within an establishment, will have a code (in the case of my local clinic, that means you can end up paying several different people!) |
