Found in a CV in the section university positions eg
1976-1978 Assistant-Assistant en Hématologie – CHU Rouen
I cold be lazy and just translate it as "assistant assistant" but I'd like to know what it stands for.
I'm thinking that the person is an "Assistant" in the hospital setting and in the university setting, given that it's a CHU.
Thanks for all input everyone. However, I still cannot say I am more than 90% sure as to what this term refers to exactly so I'm going to query it.
According to the page below, CCA are AHU are non-titulaire positions in a CHU, the former for "attending" doctors and the latter for "non-attending" doctors, such as pathologists. http://www.cofemer.fr/article.php?id_article=107
Could it just mean "from 1976-1978 I was an 'assistant', specifically an 'assistant en hématologie' at the CHU Rouen"?//I doubt it then, seeing Sue's posting above.

Explanation: I think assistant-assistant stands for CCA-AHU which, in turn, stands for Chef de Clinique Assistant - Assistant Hospitalier Universitaire.

However, I'm not really sure whether Registrar encapsulates everything in this post.
Just spoke to a British doctor who has been working in a CHU (Poitiers & Tours) for several years. He said that it is most probably is a CCA AHU post, though the assistant-assistant term raised a few eyebrows! He added that whilst in a CHU this person would be known as a chef de clinique assitant, in an ordinary hospital the person would simply be called an assistant. In both cases this would translate as Specialist Registrar, which has in recent years been adopted in the UK instead of Senior Registrar .
