French term or phrase:appui pulpaire
Hello,
I'm trying to figure out what "l’appui
pulpaire" means in the following sentence.
The sentence is from an instruction manual for an interphalangeal joint implant under the postop protocol section. Toe pulp support? Is this something to do with the toe pulp coming into contact with the floor?
ENG: "Functional dissatisfaction rate (18% vs.17.4%) and toe pulp contact defect (12% vs. 8.7%) were not significantly different in the two groups."
Thanks Chris! I'm going to go with SJLD's toe-ground contact as I think this is the correct term in the context of postop forefoot surgery management. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
The issue after forefoot surgery is whether the toes make correct contact with the ground. We don't know which toe is being referred to here. In the literature you will find "défaut d'appui pulpaire". A defect in or loss of weightbearing would make no sense. See ref below with pictures of foot being assessed for toe ground contact.
It's OK Chris, but I have worked long enough with the Orthopaedics department to make a difference in French between "en contact" and "en appui". Especially when dealing with the great toe which is essential for balance.
Dr Manu - The decision has already been made by the Asker. Appui can either mean "support" or "contact". I'm sorry - we can't always be right. Even I am occcasionally wrong.

This is definitely about weight bearing otherwise the word would have been contact in French. Ask any orthopedic surgeon!
