Refinements in detector technology allow new CT scanners to obtain multiple slices in a single rotation. MULTIDETECTOR (OR MULTISLICE) COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY is often referred to as MDCT or MSCT [ ... ] The first scanner types encompassed step-and-shoot technology that required the scanner couch to move from position to position, stop, allow the scan acquisition, move to the next position while the x-ray tube and detectors prepared for the next scan sequence, and so on.
The X-ray tube's rotation was limited by cables supplying power to it. The tube-detector assembly was required to reverse direction for each scan, in order to not tangle these cables. Consequently, there were delays between each scan acquisition called interscan delay. To get around this a bit, axial and cluster scanning were the acquisition types used in conventional scan environments.
[ ... ] Multiple detector rows enable scanning larger anatomic volumes in a shorter time while maintaining image quality and requiring no tube cooling pauses. The idea is to provide speed, anatomical coverage, and more speed.
How does MDCT work?
The early LightSpeed scanner used a fixed matrix detector design that contained 16 detector cell rows aligned in the slice or z-direction.
• Each cell was 1.25 mm thick.
• Four signals were collected per gantry rotation in the following manner.
– Each signal was collected from a single cell, or a combination of 2, 3, or 4 cells. In this early system, 4 signals were derived from 16 channels.
– The x-ray beam was divided into 4 sub-beams in the depth dimension – with slice thickness determined by collimation at the detector row.
