Medical: Pharmaceuticals / clinical trial - chronic myeloid leukemian
French term or phrase: spaniomenorrhee
I found a translation for this as 'spanomenorrhoea', but no explanation of what this means, so I'm not sure that it is correct.

agree  Rachel Fell: maybe 'secondary amenorrhoea' - http://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/amenorrhea.cfm - ? - and σπάνιος (spanios) > infrequent

neutral  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: Not the same as "spaniomenorrhea according to http://www-sante.ujf-grenoble.fr/sante/corpus/disciplines/gy... Read through my post.// Oligo = infrequent, spanio- increased cycle length. Note term "oligospanio-" for combination.

spaniomenorrhea, -aea

Explanation:
This term is used to describe a menstrual cycle which is extremely wrong. Note that it is not the same thing as oligomenorrhoea (or hypomenorrhoea), which means I do not agree with Liz's suggestion. See the definitions in the last reference.

For a definition in French :

http://www.gyneweb.fr/Sources/gyngene/gynendoc/trcycle.html

"En cas de spanioménorrhée, il y a, de temps en temps seulement, assez d'estrogènes pour déterminer des saignements endométriaux; cette présence des estrogènes à des taux suffisants peut correspondre à deux ordres de faits:

· il s'agit de règles vraies, précédées d'une ovulation et de la formation d'un corps jaune; la séquence normale de sécrétion des gonadostimulines se réalise de temps en temps, à plusieurs mois d'intervalle, au lieu de recommencer régulièrement tous les mois; entretemps, leur sécrétion de base est insignifiante, et l'ovaire non stimulé, ne sécrète pas d'estrogènes, d'où les périodes d'aménorrhée séparant les cycles vrais. On parle donc ici de spanioménorrhée ovulatoire;

www.bsmu.edu.ua/files/.../Tema #5.doc

And for both together :

http://www-sante.ujf-grenoble.fr/sante/corpus/disciplines/gy...

"• Oligoménorrhée (oligomenorrhea) : règles dont le flux est trop faible
• Spanioménorrhée (spaniomenorrhea) : allongement de la durée du cycle menstruel
jusqu’à deux ou trois mois, traduisant une anomalie de la fonction endocrine de
l’ovaire
• Oligospanioménorrhée (oligospaniomenorrhea) : règles peu abondantes et très
espacées de 2 à 3 mois"

Oligo- is fine fpor infrequent but spanio- describes a saituation where there is extension of the cylce. Oligospanio- describes a combination of both. As the original is spanio-, I would maintain that it is important to convey the idea of an extension of the length of cylce.

This would appear to be how the terms are understood in French.
However, reliable English language sources would indeed indicate that "spaniomenorrhea" is NOT used in English and that the term "oligomenorrhea" is to be preferred when translating the French "spanio-:oligo-".

I stand corrected!

Hypoménorrhée : insuffisance de l’écoulement menstruel

Spanioménorrhée : allongement de l’intervalle qui sépare les règles

Oligoménorrhée : diminution de la fréquence de l’écoulement menstruel ; règles rares

And that hypoménorrhée = hypomenorrhea
but that both spanioménorrhée and oligoménorrhée = oligomenorrhea

I relied on this source for the definitions : Prof Pierre BERNARD's short paper on the subject : http://www-sante.ujf-grenoble.fr/sante/corpus/disciplines/gy... and, setting aside the suggested English terminology, I note the use of Oligo- where hypo- would appear to beused more frequently... no pun intended!!! ;-)

neutral  Melissa McMahon: See http://old.sfendocrino.org/spip.php?article58 - "Remarque : précisons l’existence d’un faux ami en anglais, où oligomenorrhea correspond à spaniomenorrhée en français!"/Your sources suggest that in FR oligo = light, not infrequent, hence the faux ami

-> Précisément!// SOrry, yes, seee what you mean. BUT, when you look at origianl language definitions of both, from reliable academic sources, then there is in fact precision in the use of oligo and spanio by those who use the terms , FR and EN.

-> Indeed. In spite of initial searches, I made the rotten mistake of relying upon sources which are not original language sources.
