French term or phrase:Remise en solution/remettre en solution
Hi All,
I tend to get myself confused on a very basic thing with all the following terms:
remis/e en solution, reprendre/repris, reconstitué
Should it be resuspended, reconstituted, resolubilized or return/pass back to solution for remis en solution...
Here are examples of "remise en solution" in my text:
Explanation: From the context, given that the precipitate has come *out* of solution (which is what precipitate means, of course), we're now adding water to it to make it 'go back' into solution - i.e. re-dissolving the precipitate at whatever temperature it occurs at.
Thank you, Doctor. No, you are not a "mere" doctor! you are a scientist as well. I know that from having followed the answers and explanations you provide on a regular basis. Yes, we are not here to argue. We just say what we know... one can agree or disagree... not trying to win an argument. I am doing what is expected of us - to participate...
Thank you Dr Darakjian for your support. Difficult to argue chemistry with someone with your credentials, I should think. Of course I'm a mere medical doctor, and a woman to boot. What would I know? ;-)
Solubilization is sufficiently different (mechanism-wise) from dissolving that linguists and chemists have assigned a different verb to it, namely, to solubilize... We would not go ahead and refer to a truck as a big car, even though that's what it is!
This would totally contradict your agreement with re-dissolution it seems. Where is the coherence in that?
put back into solution (your suggestion) or resolubilize are still identical terms.

As a former (bio)chemist, I can say that solve is not used in this context - one solves problems and equations etc. Solvate has a specific meaning as noted above. Solubilize does indeed mean to do something to an insoluble substance to render it soluble. Dissolve is the word needed to describe what happens to e.g. sugar when you put it into water : either "It dissolves" or "You dissolve it".
I don't think so. You can talk about the reconstitution of a solution (usually a powdered or lyophilized drug put in solution or suspended by adding water), but not of a precipitate.
Thanks for everyone for the help so far. I get 79200 hits for "the precipitate was resuspended" and 41000 for "the precipitate was redissolved" and 3390 for "the precipitate was resolubilzed" - I am still uncertain
means to make (more) soluble - increase the solubility of a substance - it does not mean to dissolve or make a solution
