I am not sure quite what role this doctor has in the case, (which concerns both gastro-enterology and psychiatry), but I don't think he is her GP or the consulant gastro-enterologist.
Context:
'L'atteinte clinique débute le x janvier, date a laquelle la patiente commence a presenter des nausees, des vomissements etc etc. Cest pour cette symptomatologie que la paiente va consulter son médecin-mitant le Dr yy'

Thanks, but I think in the UK we would just say 'her doctor'.

Asker: As she went to see him, I don't think it is the latter. In the UK, also, we don't really say 'physician' very much - more 'doctor'. I'm beginning to think this is the doctor managing her case, as it appears she frequently went to see him, but I'm not sure if it is a GP or a hospital doctor. It might be a typo, but it would be quite a bad one (- there are several in the letter, though).

Attending physician


Explanation:
Must be a typo, but medecin-traitant is attending physician according to the GDT from Quebec.

The GDT says the synonym is medecin orienteur. I wonder what my late father who studied medicine in Paris would have said about this name.

Asker: Could be so, although this is for UK English, and it would be quite a typo. I don't think you'd say 'attending physician' in the UK. If you did, I think it would be the doctor going to see the patient, rather than the other way round.
