cmorin: 12:02 Feb 17, 2009: Drs Jones & Manu, I do not disagree with you. I think the asker requested the US term & there is a distinction between the 2 house-doctors in the original passage. i.e., candidate resident & resident which is equivalent to intern & resident.

A very helpful Belgian MD has provided this explanation "A Candidat Résident is a MD, at the very first level of specialisation. He/she usually does all the paper work, like the release letters, which are then signed by his/her superiors, like in this case."
