French to English translations [PRO] Medical - Medical (general) / death certificate
French term or phrase:mort réelle et constante
I have a death certificate to translate and it includes these terms. I cannot find anything on the Internet and don't know what the common equivalent is in English. Does anybody know exactly what we would use please? Many thanks.

There is no statutory requirement or provision for confirmation or certification of the fact of death although a doctor is
usually summoned to confirm that death has occurred.

Lorsqu’un médecin est appelé pour constater un décès, il va se retrouver confronté à un individu inanimé, cet état est la « mort apparente ». Donc on passe à l’état de mort réelle et constante lorsque le médecin établit le certificat de décès.

The expression "mort réelle et constante" is all about the confirmation of death. This confirmation is often made by a person who does not go on to fill out the actual certificate of (cause of) death.

A working party set up to study the problems surrounding the confirmation of death investigated current practice by means of a questionnaire sent to a random sample of accident and emergency departments in district general hospitals. Of the 38 replying, 24 said that bodies were examined in the ambulance, four in the accident and emergency department, and 10 in both. Answers to the other questions also suggest that the present procedures are in general unsatisfactory, and some dissatisfaction was expressed by departments. The individuals and organisations consulted were unanimous that confirmation of death should not be carried out in the ambulance. A change of practice would, however, create practical problems. The working party recommends therefore that the standard practice should be for all bodies to be properly examined by a doctor in the accident and emergency department, and that funds should be made available for any building alterations and increase in staff made necessary by such changes.

Le problème n'est pas de savoir s'il existe l'expression "signs of death observed and confirmed" existe "per se". Il s'agit de traduire ce que veut dire, en termes de droit FR, le fait que la mort soit réelle et constante (quelle horreur) ! C'est assez évident que la mort est confirmée (fact of death is confirmed) puisqu'il s'agit d'un acte de décès. Je ne pense pas que l'on signe un acte de décès d'une personne dont la mort n'est pas confirmée ! Le fait est que l'expression "légale" en FR est un peu plus articulée. Voir le Kudow cité
I have filled out many death certificates in my day (I was a lousy doctor lol) and I can assure you there is no "common equivalent" in English, which is what Heather asked for. This does not mean a translation should not be found for the expression, and I have provided one.
Heather a un certificat de décès à traduire. Il est évident qu'elle sait qu'il s'agit du "death certificate". En fait elle n'a pas posé cette question: elle a demandé comment traduire "mort réelle et constante" !!! C'est assz différent non ?
