The text concerns a woman who was involved in a serious bus accident and was severely injured.

not sure if "efforts" simply refers to "efforts" here, or if perhaps it could mean"stress" here

Please let me know what you think of these possibilities:

some rare stress in avoiding any reminder/recollection of the event
some rare efforts/struggles to avoid any reminder/recollection of the event

agree  SJLD: a few rare attempts to... even "apart from the odd attempt to..." would work here.

agree  ormiston: I'd maybe put it as "the occasional/odd attempt to..."

  -> Thanks

agree  Stephanie Ezrol: attempt & occasional seem to capture the idea

agree  Angela Dickson: yes, I'd avoid "rare" in English here

some rare efforts to avoid any resurgence/resurfacing of the incident

Explanation:
As the phenomenon is involuntary, resurgence/resurfacing should be the right word.

Reference: Diagnostic criteria for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Reference information:
I think they are using the terminology from the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder .
English: http://www.ptsdsupport.net/PTSD_DSM-IV-TR_Diagnosis_&_Criter...
French: http://www.info-trauma.org/flash/media-f/trousse_diagnostic_...

"intrusion" refers to criterion B = intrusive recollection of the traumatic event = Symptômes d'intrusion
and "efforts pour éviter tout rappel de l'événement" refers to criterion C = avoidant/numbing = Symptômes d'évitement & d'émoussement
C 1 and C 2

"1. Efforts to avoid thoughts, feelings, or conversations associated with the trauma
2. Efforts to avoid activities, places, or people that arouse recollections of the trauma"
"1. Efforts pour éviter les pensées, les sentiments ou les conversations associés au traumatisme.
2. Efforts pour éviter les activités, les endroits ou les gens qui éveillent des souvenirs du traumatisme."
