French to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Metallurgy / Casting / Kiln/furnace for Alumina sintering
French term or phrase: talus
In a report discussing production issues.
In several places the document mentions "le talus"
"Augmentation de la fusibilite" is potentially caused by "augmentation du chlore dans le talus"
"Augmentation de la charge thermique en amont" is potentially caused by "augmentaion du talus"
and in another section they are plan to "diriger le bruleur vers le talus"
What is it and what is the translation for "le talus"?

I saw an article that mentioned "raw mix" the mix of ingredients charged into the kiln/furnace. Is that "le talus?"

slope

Explanation:
I think 'slope' would cover it. This document has everytrhing you ever wanted to know about the foundries industry http://aida.ineris.fr/bref/bref_anglais/sf_bref_0505.pdf

Hearth-type furnaces and shaft furnaces are used for non-ferrous metals like Al. Under the latter:
'The furnace can be constructed in a number of configurations depending on the particular metal and application, variations include the provision of sloping hearths and side wells for specific melting purposes, tuyères and lances for the addition of gases.'

You can see the sloping bits in Figures 2.18 and 2.19 and also that the burners lead into the sloped section.

solid layer of electrolyte

Explanation:
You say this is relative to sintering, so my answer is irrelevant, but here it is anyway, FWIW.

In the "melting pot" of aluminium electrolysis, the electrolyte hardens against the cathodic walls. This is the talus. I don't know there is a name for it in English other than "solid layer of electrolyte" or something like that.

[contains a nice diagram]

In conventional electrolytic cells for aluminium production, HEAT LOSS THROUGH THE SIDE WALLS is necessary to cause the formation of a PROTECTIVE LAYER OF SOLID ELECTROLYTE

Maybe something similar happens when sintering alumina.
