You know the context, of course, but the usual meaning of "épargne" is "masking", ie the bits you don't want covered in paint or whatever. However, it does seem perfectly logical to call "épargne" something you save. Every engineer has several "boxes of bits", invariably dismissed by wives as "junk", but precious nevertheless for that "ah, I have one of those" moments. "Leftovers" might do it.
