"[nom du client] s'engage à confier en exclusivité à [nom du fournisseur] l'ensemble du travail d'ébauchage par filage à chaud (transformation du stade rond ou billette en ***ébauches*** filées), nécessaire à son alimentation en ébauches pour la fabrication de tubes pour [confidentiel : nom d'un équipement] en alliages de Nickel."

"Le métal devra répondre aux exigences de qualité nécessaires à une bonne extrusion à chaud notamment en termes d'usinabilité, de forgeabilité, état de surface, dimensions, rectitude. Pour permettre à [nom du fournisseur] de réaliser ces ébauches..."

For confidentiality reasons, I can't provide any more info.

A colleague who has worked in the subject area suggests "rough extrudings".

Or maybe "rough castings"?

Voici une tentative de réponse qui fait aussi la part belle au "blank" de mediamatrix/liz et au "rough" du demandeur/liz !

Fabriquer des tubes :
1ere étape : passage du solide au creux : ébauchage / filage
2ème étape : laminage

... 1.2 Tubes sans soudure : ébauchage
Les procédés de coulée des métaux produisent en général des sections massives : une première étape de la mise en forme des tubes consistera donc à passer d’un corps plein à un corps creux.
...Le filage à chaud est très utilisé. Il en existe plusieurs variantes : filage-perçage sur aiguille ..., filage sur aiguille d’une barre-ébauche forgée puis alésée ..., extrusion par filières à ponts ( aluminium).
L’autre grand procédé est le laminage-perçage rotatif à chaud, dit « procédé Mannesmann » ... et ses variantes,...billette-ébauche ... empaler sur la pointe d’un mandrin...
1.3 Tubes sans soudure : changement de section à chaud
Dans cette deuxième étape, qui s’applique surtout aux aciers, on cherche à diversifier le rapport des trois dimensions caractéristiques du tube : le diamètre intérieur φi, le diamètre extérieur φe et l'épaisseur e. En effet, on ne peut pas obtenir toutes les dimensions par les procédés de perçage, pour des raisons techniques
(= laminage)

The solid billet becomes a tube by being drawn over a piercing tool by two external rollers set at an angle to each other that move the billet. At this point a “rough” tube has been formed.
The rough tube is put through an elongator, ...shape the tube closer to its final outside diameter and wall thickness.
The next step takes place at a reducing mill, where the outside diameter is brought still closer to its final size and the tube is made oval to ultimately improve its final finish. The rotary sizer is the last step in the basic seamless tube-making process. The rotary sizer restores the tube to a round shape and brings it to its final outside dimension.

As for blank, it is first whole (barre-ébauche, billette-ébauche) and then pierced (ébauche filée /rough-pierced tube blank)

Sorry, this really IS only one term, but I wanted to draw attention to the 3 ways it is being used here:

"(Para. ) 14. Reprise ébauche des sections

Reprendre au tour ébauche les sections brasées pour ramener la cote extérieure des sections à 0.x mm du bossage du collecteur.
Reprendre, si nécessaire, le diamètre extérieur des sections brasées à 77 mm.

Now I know that in general terms it means 'rough', but I can't quite get my head round how to express it here. GDT gives 'first operation lathe' for 'tour à ébauche', but I'm far from convinced that is applicable here.

I guess what's really confusing me is how to express the idea of 'reprise ébauche'

This part of the document is all about getting the small rotor to about the right diameter (approx. 80 mm) and roundness, before final rectification and balancing
