Explanation:
It appears that "repeated impacts" are "imprinted" on the end of the punch, though I have my doubts that "imprinting" is the important part; rather that mechanical shock against the workpiece is the focus of attention. The rest of the patent may shed more light on what is actually happening, but if in doubt, "apply" seems a safer bet.
