hello everybody :)

"Les dispositifs de l’art antérieur présentaient l’inconvénient que le retour du cylindre d’approche de sa position de travail à sa position rétractée s’effectuait sous l’action d’un ressort de rappel hélicoïdal loge dans une chambre annulaire entre la paroi de l’alésage et le cylindre d’approche.
Il en résultait en premier lieu une limitation de la course maximale du cylindre d’approche pour une longueur hors-tout donnée de l’ensemble.

Parsing the sentence slightly differently, this wikipedia article might be interesting. Suggests that longueur goes with hors-tout and the English would be "overall length".
But have no domain knowledge so unsure if relevant at all
