French term or phrase:communauté de brigades
from a brochure about a business park and the surrounding area (France) - here they are talking about the police force and gendarmerie facilities:
la brigade de xxx (city) assure la sécurité .... elle fait partie de la communauté de brigades de XXX (name of city) (note, this brigade is made up of 12 gendarmes)
so far I have: the xxx squadron is responsible for security ... it is part of the XXX brigade company (community?)
Explanation: Why not simply "community", since this word is widely used to identify all possible sorts of "communautés": see Web.Ref. 1 or 2.
A tout prendre, "brigade" me paraît plus difficile à traduire. Wordreference propose "small unit of gendarmes". But IMHO, that does not reflect the fact that a "brigade" de gendarmerie is part of a territory-linked organisation (contrary to other gendarmerie units, les "gendarmes mobiles").
IMHO, district (which identifies a geographical area, un "ressort" comme on dit en vocabulaire administratif et juridique français) does not match your query: communauté (and community) apply to the content.
Explanation: Once upon a time, until fair recently, towns of certain size had their own brigade de gendarmerie and each of these maintained law and order in their respective districts night and day. Ignoring increasing crime levels and yielding only to pressures to cut costs, a number of brigades in a larger area were merged to form a communauté de brigades in much the same way as communes have leagued forces within a communauté de communes, though the Gendarmerie's communautés transcend the borders of the latter. Locally, for instance, the brigades of Verneuil sur Avre, Breteuil sur Iton, and Rugles form a communauté. Consequently, when you wish to report a crime, you have to ring first and find out which gendarmerie is open on that day. It also means that the two - yes TWO - gendarmes on duty at night have to cover an enormous area, taking around 45 minutes or more to drive from one side to the other. Les flag's are therefore a matter of television fiction only ...

A year ago I collared a pair of delinquants causing mischief, called the cops and had to hold them for half an hour while the gendarmes were en route. Fortunately I had talked to the police before, having planned my little escapade, and a lovely gendarmette let me know what to do: while they are still meek and mild having just been informed of your citizen's arrest and have not had time to cogitate, you get one of them to sit on the ground with his legs beneath a car, each side of a wheel. You then stand behind him, holding the other person. The person sitting can't do much other than sit there, and you have only one person to control as they start devising means of getting away before the cops turn up, and putting up resistance.

Explanation: It appears that "communauté de brigades" are simply made up of neighbouring squadrons so that they can fulfill their mission over their territories by joining forces.
