French term or phrase: automate blindé
In a WWII history of a military unit:

"[The unit] eut par ailleurs à se familiariser avec de nouveaux armements, petits automates blindés et lance-roquettes, artillerie de très gros calibre, qui fit disparaître près d’un tiers du bâti du centre-ville dès les premiers jours de l’opération."

Explanation:
I can't find any webrefs to justify automate --> vehicle, but nothing else makes much sense, either. Maybe the author was trying to suggest that armoured vehicles look like robots ... ?

As you want US English, leave out the 'u': armored.

Explanation:
Pourquoi pas tout simplement "robot" pour ""automate" ?

En tous cas, "vehicle" ne me paraît pas convenir: ce terme désigne (bien sûr) un véhicule, piloté ou non par un homme. Il ne permet donc pas de discriminer la notion de "automate", et (à voir le contexte), le terme est également un peu sur-dimensionné pour traduire "petit automate blindé".
