French term or phrase: Les formations artistiques
"Les formations artistiques connaissent d'autant mieux ces oeuvres qu'elles ont été reprise"

I just don't understand this sentence - probably being thick!
Who knows the repeated works better?

groups of artists
Explanation:
Difficult to be specific without more context....for example, I can't tell whether this is talking about works of art as in paintings, or about some other art form such as music etc.

Anyway, "formation" in the sense of training (or training course) doesn't seem to fit. "Formation" also has a more general use of a group or grouping, as in a "formation musicale" = a music group. Hence my suggestion of a group of artists (painters or whatever).

Another alternative might be "artists' groups" (with apostrophe).

thank you - I had already come to the conclusion about "group" myself by this point. I said I was probably being thick! Nice to have it confirmed tho. Ces oeuvres if you are interested refers to operas that have already been performed at the Palais Garnier
