in the case of rap music, it seems fairly clear that the person on the receiving end of the cultural experience is, in fact, listening.

In the passage you quote the author talks of a 'story' which is something that may be read aloud (to a listener) or read on paper silently, in which case the reader is the 'receptor' of an act of storytelling without actually listening.

I agree with your comments, but in the following link, receptor, receiver and listener are all used:

This text is the abstract of a thesis, which is why I thought listener might not be sufficient and receptor keeps cropping up in sociological papers. But, then why make it complicated?!
