French term or phrase: faisant office de contre-chant
Singing exercise op 34 N°14 Lentamento molto cantabile.
Work dedicated to the singer Antonita Nejdanova.
Originally written for a voice and piano, this composition was then transcribed for several instruments (violin, cello, clarinet...) :Dans cette vocalise, la cellule initiale est reprise et paraphrasée par le piano en contrepoint tandis que dans la partie conclusive c’est le clavier qui s’empare du thème, l’instrument faisant à son tour office de contre-chant.
Contrepoint et contre-chant seem to be both in english "counterpoint" , how can i avoid repeating the term ?

agree  Wordeffect: Counter melody rather than harmony, the word "chant" implying something "singable". If this lies higher in pitch, David's suggestion of descant might be appropriate, but you'd need to hear it to be sure (as he says).

-> Thanks - I put "harmony" then immediately thought, "Hang on! Melody is better"

taking on the role of descant

Explanation:
I'd want to hear it, but contre-chant very often is not counterpoint.

-> Of course. It is not clear to me in the text what is actually happening melodically - when the piano grabs hold of the theme, is it counterpoint? Was it ever? Or is it just variations on a theme? I'd want to listen to know how "contre-chant" is being used
