GLOSSARY ENTRY (DERIVED FROM QUESTION BELOW)
French term or phrase:
diagramme en chaussette
English translation:
operating range according to the pressure and temperature (diagramme en chaussette)
French to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Nuclear Eng/Sci / documentation
French term or phrase:chaussette
This is describing the operation of a power station, and the associated documentation:
"... on fait apparaître en y situant la partie concernée par la méthode et ses différentes séquences, en fonction de la pertinence de l'information, soit la « chaussette » du diagramme de pilotage , soit le diagramme des mouvements d'eau."
I haven't a clue what a chaussette might be doing in such a document. Any ideas?
Explanation: Operation of Nuclear Reactors
Command of GER (General Operating Rules), ***operating range according to the pressure and temperature (diagramme en chaussette)***, operating of nuclear systems.

at least Aptus' own translator provided "operating range according to the pressure and temperature" as an explanation in English for the meaning of the term in French as applied in your context to nuclear engineering
an idea might be to give Aptus a call at their head office in Versailles (phone 01 30 83 91 30) and query them directly
on the meaning of this term in French and its translation into English
the first of the two charts appears to be some type of power station process control chart with a sock-shaped graphic and the second would be a water flow chart
without an actual image of the first chart any suggested translations would be mere guesswork
perhaps it would be better to query your customer as to any images available for the first chart which might help to identify the precise meaning of "chaussette" in your context
Could it be one of those things where you draw a wobbly line round certain elements of (say) a flow-chart etc. in order to highlight the association between certain elements — which in view of the likelihood of a vaguely linear nature might perhaps be thought of as faintly resembling said item of hosiery?
the diagram is silent: nothing resembling a sock. I am aware of the use of chaussettes elewhere in nuclear power stations (and not just for humans), but this is a particular part of this particular document, and therefore representational and non-physical. I always get suspicious when things appear in inverted commas.
I would look at the diagram in question, just in case something (a process, etc.) looks like a sock.

This certainly set me on the right lines - isn't is wonderful what a picture can do? Thanks

Asker: Thank you for the link. Unfortunately it seems that Aptus' own translator was also defeated by ("diagramme en chaussette") and just left it as the original French!
Asker: I've just been looking at P-V and P-S diagrams, and guess what? They kind of look like socks! The thing that bothers me, though, is that these are not P-T diagrams, as suggested in the Aptus text.
