Tech/Engineering - Nuclear Eng/Sci / EPR core catcher structure | | French term or phrase: plot amortisseur de puit de cuve | Just in case someone out there has encountered an existing translation for this, or has more time to do research than I have right now!
These plots are located beneath the reactor vessel of an EPR (Evolutionary Pressurized Reactor, formerly European Pressurized Reactor, but they want to sell it State-side, and "EPR" has stuck). They are radial concrete projections within a void beneath the vessel. The void itself is surrounded by a concrete structure with a highly heat-resistant zirconium lining on the outside. This structure - part of the core catcher - will collect the corium of core meltdown and direct it to a place where it can spread out over a large area to facilitate cooling, rather than punching a 50m deep hole in the earth. The concrete is of a special design: the whole thing, including the plots, is sacrificial. The plots are designed to crush to some extent (like the front end of cars these days) and absorb the impact of the reactor-vessel bottom head should the vessel explode, and in so doing protect the fusible gate through which the corium will eventually flow. As the core melts, it will melt first the special sacrificial concrete, designed to limit the generation of hydrogen (is any of this starting to sound familiar?), then the fusible plug, and will flow to where intensive cooling can take place.
For the moment I've résumé'd the above into diversely "reactor-pit impact-absorption blocks" and "impact blocks of the reactor core retention pit", in different places in the text.
