Does anyone know what the usual and customary English translation of this phrase is?

Here is the context:

Il est connu que les nutriments du genre oligoéléments, plantes, <> (acides aminés) ou vitamines peuvent activer ou inhiber certaines fonctions de l'organisme ou avoir un effet neutre purement énergétique.

Recommended dietary allowances or similar norms are formulated on an individual as well as on a population level. Nutrient and food objectives are usually formulated on a population level. Neither of these are directly suitable for individual counselling. For such a purpose they have to be converted into dietary guidelines, which would be part of - for example - a nutrition information campaign.

Asker: Yes, I agree with you. We are talking in this document about the ingredients in the compound. Not about abstract nutritional principles, which is a concept, not the nominative form of the phrase, which is what we are using here. I think it should probably be active nutritional ingredients, based on how "principe active" means. This is not "legalese" it is PATENT TERMINOLOGY, SCIENTIFIC TERMINOLOGY and I think you are right. Thanks, Laura
