In a document from Monaco:

"L'Aide National au Logement et l'Allocation Différentiel de Loyer ne concernent que

-- les logements anciens
-- les personnes de nationalité monégasque, assimilées ou celles qui résident à Monaco depuis au moins quarante années sans interruption."

I'm thinking that here, since they are talking about the criteria required to qualify for this assistance, "assimilées" must refer to an official status, not just the subjective fact of having adopted the language and lifestyle of Monaco.

Could it be something like "naturalized"? I can't find any confirmation for this in any dictionaries or websites.

Or is "assimilées" referring to "personnes de nationalité Monégasque"?

Many thanks in advance for any ideas. Target language is US English.

I have spent some time looking at this because I could completely understand why you felt it might mean "naturalised"....but I can't find any reason to assume this. My interpretation of this sentence is however different to that of the other two answerers. Generally accepted definition seems to be: In the social sciences, assimilation is the process of integration whereby immigrants, or other minority groups, are "absorbed" into a generally larger community. This presumes a loss of all characteristics which make the newcomers different. A region where assimilation is occurring is sometimes referred to as a "melting pot". -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assimilation_(sociology).

But also see the references below which in my opinion make it clear that this is a specific term which simply means that the people are living there on a long-term basis but are not necessarily naturalised i.e. citizens. Concepts and definitions of minorities vary widely from one country to another. It was considered as important in the framework of this mapping exercise to include all minorities. As a consequence, a broad and pragmatic approach has been chosen regarding minoritygroups to include in the project. And lastly, my Penguin dictionary of sociology makes this important distinction: "the particular character of the ethnic group [...] may enhance, retard or preclude intermarriage, participation in citizenship and social acceptance. Assimilation is often used interchangeably with acculturation."

It seems to me that assimilated is used in this context to cover populations of originally different ethnic groups who may or may not be naturalised citizens but are settled in the country. One of the reasons that I believe supports this is that you either are or you are not a citizen of a country. A resident or someone on a work permit is not the equivalent to a citizen or considered as a citizen - they do not have the right to vote, etc. I think it better to stick with assimilated therefore, and leave how they qualify that to the lawyers but essentially I think this is referring to EU citizens who do not need to be naturalised but are culturally integrated.
