Tech/Engineering - Other / FMEA
French term or phrase: Etat Solde
Fellow linguists,

I have come across the phrase 'Etat Solde' as the column header of an 'FMEA' (Failure mode effects analysis) table.

The column in question falls under the general heading, 'Tableau de synthèse des Actions' and the sub-headings are, in order: 'action, qui, quand, résultats, état solde'. Examples of entries in the 'état solde' column are:
Envoi de la synthèse de la FMEA
Lors de la conception
Lors de la programmation
Dans le cas d'une fuite minime --> détection impossible

In all the Canadian 'Terminum' database (the only place I can find the phrase), all uses seem to be financial (e.g. Pay statement).

I have racked my brains and come up with some vaguely feasible suggestions (current state of affairs?), but I would appreciate any real knowledge anyone might have as to possible meanings of this phrase (i.e. why the use of 'solde'? - some kind of reference to balance?).

Thanks in advance.

Explanation:
solde : Différence positive (solde débiteur) ou négative (solde créditeur) entre le total du débit et le total du crédit d'un compte.

I think this is borrowed from accounting where the 'solde' is the balance sheet. In this context it comes after 'resultats' and from your examples it tends to point to an action to take or an analysis of where the problem? lies - basically it seems to be saying what shall we do or what can we do with these results?

Maybe you or someone else can think of a better word or phrase.

Could it simply be the 'conclusion' then? e.g. They conclude that the problem comes from the design, programming etc or in the case of a tiny leak they conclude that it's impossible to detect - though it's true that to send a report is not really a conclusion.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi Alain. Thanks for your comments. However, the analysis of the problem and actions to be taken are covered in earlier columns. 'Etat solde' is the very final column in the table and its entries are, confusingly, very similar to those found in the 'quand' (when the proposed action should be taken') column. I wonder whether the results (which are just a list of abbreviations) are results of taking the proposed remedial actions? Which leaves the 'Etat solde' as...? I am still baffled.

Asker: Yes, I wonder... Something like, 'on balance...' I will mull that one over, thanks.
