Does anyone have a good translation for this saying? Here's the context: "'Ce qui ne tue pas engraisse' constate la sagesse populaire. Les Etats ont beaucoup tue, mais dans les voies de l'evolution, tout impenetrables et choquantes qu'elles soient, ils ont joue leur role positif."

This isn't a literal translation, but this is what we would say in this context in the USA. Also, "it will either cure you or kill you", there are a couple of versions, and I suppose you could make it impersonal by substituting "one" for "you."

Explanation:
This is the version I know. In my experience, this is the most common version used in the US. It is closer to the version in French and also to the version in Portuguese, which goes like this: O que não mata engorda.
