The context is car advertising spots. Can't get the right term for it so far...Suspense? Thrilling? Anyone brave enough? Thanks in advance :-)

[which creates a subtle but] lasting impression
Explanation:
Hardly brave or brillant...

à la notion de "need arousal";

Well, this was a hard call, buddies. I finally decided to put my life in the hands of Fatey the goddess with something like "creating a lingering effect". OK, not brilliant, I know...Thanks to all three but I must give Arobb the honours for his réflexions diverses. I just love "philosophical linguistics"...and in French even more!!
Merci beaucoup, a bientôt :-)))))

après coup = afterthought

Explanation:
Unfortunately not quite as thrilling as you hoped...

Straight from the dictionary (Harrap New Shorter French-English Dictionary)

Note: "after-effect" in English would have been the right translation for "contre coup" in French ...

See the following examples:

"À l'inverse, l'école allemande privilégie les
mécanismes, toujours simples et souvent très
originaux, au détriment du thème, généralement
trouvé après coup."
"By contrast, the so-called German school favours the
mechanics, always simple and often very original, to the
detriment of the theme, which is generally an
afterthought. "

"The legend of the making of the world in six days was an afterthought, in fact more than twenty thousand years afterwards."

"A cynic might be excused for suspecting that the separate "objectives" we now accept for the 2 were developed as an afterthought and are more of an excuse for the situation rather than a real intent."
