Tech/Engineering - Patents / patent for a stent
French term or phrase: enseigner
"L'homme du métier aurait immédiatement reconnu que le document D1 enseigne deux types de piliers longitudinaux [etc.]"

It appears that this is a standard verb for patents, and I see what is meant - indicates, instructs, stipulates - so, how is 'enseigner' rendered, in patents, without an indirect object?

Many thanks

Clarification request(s) and response
Drmanu49: 7:59pm Apr 27, 2007: Are you sure it is not a typo for renseigner (to document)?
Drmanu49: 8:35pm Apr 27, 2007: It could if the document was scanned and OCR was used.
Do you have other sentences?
Otherwise it may be the archaic form meaning to inform or to teach how to use or to put to practice.
Stephanie Mitchel: 8:47pm Apr 27, 2007: It's a PDF - so this is the original version.

Here's another sentence: La demande internationale WO 96/03092 enseigne également la caractéristique selon laquelle les moyens de flexion positionnés dans le pilier longitudinal se trouvent entre les sommets de rangées adjacentes de pièces entrecroisées [etc]."
Dr Sue Levy: 8:50pm Apr 27, 2007: Stephanie, it might be better to ask these questions under "patents". The language is very special - nothing medical about it. Medical translators with no experience of patents will not be able to help you. I've been to Patent Land...
Dr Sue Levy: 8:50pm Apr 27, 2007: had a quick look around and got out even faster ;-)
Dr Sue Levy: 8:55pm Apr 27, 2007: Look here http://www.european-patent-office.org/epo/pubs/oj98/10_98/10... English source with French and German translation - enseigne in French is teaches/discloses...
Drmanu49: 9:04pm Apr 27, 2007: Sue is right concerning Patents but here is a list of synonyms.
apprendre, éclairer, éduquer, expliquer, faire, former, inculquer, informer, initier, instruire, montrer, professer.
Bruce Popp: 12:17pm Apr 28, 2007: The patent must refer to other patents (or documents) in the prior art. Are any of these written in Englsih (not translated)? It is important to consult these, because they are a valuble source of speicifc vocabulary and patentese.
Stephanie Mitchel: 6:40pm Apr 28, 2007: Yes Bruce - and thanks for the tip. I'm finding everything I need in one of the documents referred to in the patent.
Drmanu49: 9:33pm Apr 28, 2007: It seems teach was my alternative answer?

Notes to answerer
Asker: It appears the writer of at least the second reference you supply is not a native English speaker - "taught" is the past tense of "teach."
