Tech/Engineering - Patents | | French term or phrase: axes d’essieu tubulaires | This is from a patent application so I can't give too much information here.
I'm confused by "axes d’essieu" as a direct translation would seem to be "axle axles"! Are they a particular type of axle?
The document states that they are often used in the railway field so that might help. Sometimes the document just gives "axes". Other forms are: "axes d'essieu pleins" and "axes d'essieu massifs".

Explanation:
While "essieu" is indeed "axle", it tends in fact to designate the "axle assembly", i.e. including the wheels at each end, so when talking about just the "axle" they have to specify "axe".
It's the same as us talking about "axle loading" - of course unless it has wheels fitted, the axle simply won't take any weight. Being Cartesian, the French take account of this by including the wheels in the notion of "essieu".
