Steel plate tanks

Explanation:
"Tôle" = "steel plate". "Steel" tout court signifie "acier" - pas forcément sous forme de minces feuilles comme la tôle !

Quant à "bassin", je crois que "tank" est plus adapté que "basin", ou que "pond". See WebRef.

steel mud pits

Explanation:
Again, Moreau&Brace give bassin à boue as "mud pit" in their "Dictionnaire du forage et des puits".

Mud pit An open pit dug in the ground to hold drilling fluid or waste materials discarded after the treatment of drilling mud. for some drilling operations, mud pits are used for suction to the mud pumps, settling of mud sediments, and storage of reserve mud. steel tanks are much more commonly used for these purposes now, but they are still sometimes referred to as pits.

A large tank that holds drilling fluid on the rig or at a mud-mixing plant. FOR LAND RIGS, MOST MUD PITS ARE RECTANGULAR STEEL CONSTRUCTION, with partitions that hold about 200 barrels each. They are set in series for the active mud system. On most offshore rigs, pits are constructed into the drilling vessel and are larger, holding up to 1000 barrels. Circular pits are used at mixing plants and on some drilling rigs to improve mixing efficiency and reduce dead spots that allow settling. Earthen mud pits were the earliest type of mud pit, but environmental protection concern has led to less frequent use of open pits in the ground. Today, earthen pits are used only to store used or waste mud and cuttings prior to disposal and remediation of the site of the pit

What are you waffling about? They are MUD PITS. Your link says they are mud pits. Even ON OFFSHORE RIGS THEY ARE CALLED MUD PITS EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT LITERALLY MUD PITS BUT STORAGE TANKS. I guess we dont call places doghouses or monkey boards offshore either?

Here is the real industry standard glossary. Have a gander.
