Google finds books (Complétion et reconditionnement des puits: programmes et modes opératoires) in the oil well context. Seems to be translated from English - so original should reveal the EN term (see section 3.1.4. of the book).
It is rather ambiguous, isn't it? I think the best you can do is either get clarification from the client or translate as is under the assumption/hope that the reader will have sufficient context to know what the author is on about! It all depends on where and how big this water/gas interface is. If it's 1000m down and 5cm in diameter, then it's unlikely to be a human intervention!
