French to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Petroleum Eng/Sci
French term or phrase:Carotte de fond
In an "End of exploration drilling report"
" Des cutting ont été prélevés tout le long du puits (sauf dans les zones à perte de circulation). L'échnatillonnage a été intégré par 14 carottes de fond et 10 carottes latérales."
"Les carottes de fond suivantes ont été prélevées:" follows a list of depth intervals, with % of recovery, lithology and formation)
carottage de fond recovers (relatively) intact samples, depending on the nature of the rock. The other technique you refer to is presumably sidewall coring (latéral) which disturbs the rock, resulting in a less-than-perfectly-intact sample.
My problem is not with core sample (carotte), but with "de fond". I have found a discussion forum speaking of "carottage de fond", which was supposed to be different from another type of carottage (which distroyed the samples), but the forum was unfortunately in French, so no help there...
