Art/Literary - Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts) / comic books
French term or phrase: gaufrier
About a book by Tori Miki, "un gaufrier de neuf cases muettes", or "a XXX of nine panels/frames without text." I completely understand the metaphor of the waffle iron and its application to the page of a comic book, but I wonder whether it is used in English. I might be slightly familiar language, or comics jargon. Thanks for any leads and/or suggestions!

Explanation:
I'm not directly involved in this industry, but have never come across a term resembling your waffle metaphor.

One comic strip artist I did once come into contact talked about the process of creating, and said "You just start off with this blank grid, ..."

Thank you, Tony M., and thanks to Speakering and fourth for their contributions. "grid" comes closest to what it is: a page with nine square frames of equal size.

To kick off.
It's a standard basic framework.
Let's wait for someone who works in the field. My young wife whose profession was that of a graphic designer may well come back with some ideas.

agree Richard Benham: I quite like the idea of a waffling iron...in this case without waffle.

-> Thanks, Richard! Yes, they can be SO talkative, it's a wonder the ironing ever gets done...

Notes to answerer
Asker: The problem for me is that a storyboard serves as preparation for shooting in cinema, whereas here it is a work in its own right -and it is filled in, by the way.

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
neutral Tony M: The only problem is, the idea of 'storyboard' rather suggests it is filled in, whereas the context here (as I understand it) refers to the blank frames, before there is anything in them.
