"L'étape peut par exemple comprendre les opérations consistant à mesurer le gradient de l'intensité de l'image à chaque pixel, à sélectionner, en tant que contour, chaque ensemble de pixels voisins présentant le gradient le plus élevé, et à former une carte de contours contenant chaque contour détecté dans l'image."

Explanation:
In all the image processing I've come into contact with, one is more likely to talk about 'outlines', since we are talking here about defining the outlines of objects on the basis of pixel-to-pixel variations; this si not quite the same thing as a geographical 'contour map', relating to the topography of the terrain.
