To me, it's "a genre that has been around for a long time as some kind of paean to illusion"
This seems to fit with the trompe l'œil that follows.
I think it means that his (her?) particular style of still-life photography resembles a certain genre (no doubt painting and photography!) that has in some way seemed to celebrate trickery and illusion — I'm thinking Archimboldo here?
